Cultural Differences – New Zealand

An island country in South Western Pacific ocean and one of the last lands to be settled by humans, any guesses as to which country are we talking about? Oh c’mon the title of this blog already gave it away (wink). Today we are going to talk about New Zealand!

New Zealanders (also called Kiwis derived from the flightless bird Kiwi, which is the National Symbol of New Zealand) are laid-back, welcoming and very friendly. Influenced by the British and European customs as well as the Maori and Polynesian traditions, people living here come from different variety of ethnic backgrounds. Let’s explore this remote island of paradise!

Food And Drink

Sharing food is a traditional Kiwi way of bringing people together in a relaxing atmosphere. The Kiwis love a good drink! However, you need to be at least 18 years old to purchase alcohol in New Zealand. Marlborough, famous for its Sauvignon Blanc is the largest wine producing region in New Zealand. Wine tasting and wine tours are great reasons to visit New Zealand.

The New Zealand cuisine owes much to British food such as fish and chips, custard squares, pavlova and meat pies. One can also get to taste Maori cuisine such as sweet potato, pork is influenced by European settlers. Hangi,a traditional Maori method of cooking is a must try.

Ask ask ask

Don’t be afraid to ask someone to explain anything you find confusing. It’s the easiest way to learn and you’ll find that Kiwis are quite approachable and willing to help. You can also ask Kiwis to tell you if you’re doing something that isn’t appropriate.

Smoking is rare in New Zealand and prohibited in most of public places. Generally people are expected to smoke outside. If you want to smoke, it’s better to ask the people around you if they mind, even if you are outside.

Human Rights

Conquering milestones is nothing new for New Zealanders, it was the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote.

No Private Talks

Even though Kiwis are quite friendly and approachable, they are uncomfortable in talking about their private life with a new acquaintance. Easiest topics to talk on are weather, sports or weekend plans.

Overall, the land of Lord Of The Rings is one of the most beautiful place to visit, and quite peaceful to live in. What are you waiting for? Pack your bags right now to visit these amazing country!
